In line with the determination of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to create jobs and wealth among Nigerian youths using Information and Communication Technology tools, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has commenced the training of some selected members of the National Youth Service Corps on open source software development.
The training which is to provide the platform for the Corp members to showcase their talents and ideas would aid job creation and revenue generation as an alternative to oil.
The NITDA Acting Director General at the ceremony stated that the objective behind NITDA’s human capacity development agenda is to encourage entrepreneurship among Nigerians and to reduce youths’ reliance on white collar jobs, as this administration is determined to continually provide an enabling environment that would encourage the youths to aspire to be employers of labour.
The representative of the management of NYSC at the event, Mrs. Mariam Mshelia commended NITDA for the opportunity given to the Corp members to acquire a deeper practical knowledge of what they learnt in school. She sought for more of such to be extended to every part of the country to give equal opportunity to Nigerian graduates. She urged the participants to concentrate on the training and put into practice what they have learnt.
At the completion of the training, a Corp member who is one of the participants, Mr. Joseph Odou stated that he will use the knowledge he has acquired from the training to create an entertainment website.
Another participant, Mr. Okafor Ogochukwu in appreciation said he has no formal background in ICT but with what the training has exposed him to, he is now a proud owner of a bulk SMS company.
